Frequently Asked Questions

• How much area can you clear in an hour or day?

The production rate depends on three things: how thick the brush to be cleared is, how many desirable trees there are to work around, and the terrain. Most jobs for the Hydro Axes fall somewhere in the broad range of 2 to 5 acres a day. We can give you a closer estimate by looking at your land.

• What do you do with the mulch? Do you pick it up?

GWC recommends that the mulch be left on the ground. It has tremendous benefits by reducing erosion, capturing rain, holding the moisture in the soil, and lowering the soil temperatures in the summer. It will prevent the baked earth effect of other clearing methods that expose the soil to direct sunlight without protection. In some cases such as building slabs or road building areas, the mulch can be moved with a loader and relocated for use elsewhere.

• Will grass grow through the mulch?

Yes, grass will definitely grow in the mulch. The cedar mulch does not chemically retard the growth. I believe this misconception stems from mulching without reseeding in thick cedar areas where no grass remained under the trees. If there are seeds there they will grow, but if there is nothing, the results are predictable. This is why we recommend seeding many of our clearing jobs.

• Can you leave trees that we want to keep?

We work around desirable trees on just about every job. Our operators are expert in protecting the trees you want to leave.

• Do you charge by the acre or hour?

Normally we charge by hours of machine operation. We have found that hourly charges work best for our customers and us, although some jobs are priced as a lump sum or by the acre. Many times peoplešs priorities change as they watch different areas of their property open up and see how much progress we can make in a short time.

• How far will you travel to do work? Do you charge for transportation or set up?

We will travel to work anywhere in Texas. There are no transportation charges within 100 miles of Wimberley, Texas. We absorb that cost into our minimum time charge. Outside 100 miles the transportation charge is $2/mile, negotiable based on the size of the job.

• How small or large of an area will you work on?

GWC has different types of equipment for all size jobs. We have completed lots measuring from feet to hundreds of acres.

• Does cedar grow back from the roots?

No. If the cedar is cut to the ground it will die.

• Can you attack mesquite trees?

Yes. However, mesquite will probably grow back without treatment. We have been told that if we Hydro Ax larger mesquites they may not come back. Also if we mulch and then the land is kept shredded they will eventually give up and die.

• Do you provide service for scrub oak?

Yes. We can mulch scrub oak and then apply a specific herbicide to prevent regrowth.

• What about rocks?

We work in rocks all the time. Yes, they are hard on the equipment and we try to avoid hitting them. Big boulders must be avoided. Smaller rocks get pulverized. The quality of mulch is reduced in very rocky areas because we cannot go back over it very well.

• What about slopes?

The Hydro Axes are four-wheel drive with very large tires. They can work on slopes that are not extremely steep. As a general rule the tractors will work on anything a person can easily traverse.
